A Morgan Stanley survey of 878 smokers published in December found that 40% of Newport smokers would most likely try to quit upon a menthol ban. Peer-reviewed scientific studies have drawn mixed conclusions as to whether menthol-cigarette users find it harder to quit. Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there’s scant evidence that smokers of menthol varieties are at a greater risk for smoking-related disease. Only one large epidemiological study has found a higher risk of lung cancer, and only in men.
“We feel confident that if you look at the underlying data and epidemiology, it’s absolutely clear that there is no difference in disease rates between menthol and non-menthol smokers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” says William True,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lorillard’s senior vice president of research.
While the other big cigarette manufacturers also oppose a ban, the stakes are higher for Lorillard. The rising popularity of Newport has helped the company boost its market share in the declining U.S. tobacco industry. The 251-year-old company’s overall market share by retail-sales volume rose to 13% in last year’s third quarter, from about 9% in 2001.
With their enticing cool and minty flavor, menthol cigarettes have emerged as one of the most controversial products made by the tobacco industry.
Kids are particularly drawn to them, with nearly 45 percent of smokers aged 12 to 17 using menthol cigarettes, according to a 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Most black teenaged smokers — and 82.7 percent of black adult smokers — favor menthols,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the same survey found.
“The manufacturers would have you believe there is not a scintilla of evidence that menthol is no more dangerous than other cigarettes to the individual smoker, but we do not agree,” said Ellen Vargyas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], general counsel for the American Legacy Foundation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a smoking prevention and cessation organization in Washington, D.C.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], founded with funding from the landmark Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco industry and state governments. “Over 80 percent of African-American smokers smoke menthol, and African-America smokers have the highest rates of lung cancer.
