Headwind sucks: Jack Smith and friends skate along USA.

SO I WAS VISITING WOODWARD this summer and while I'm there I always love to BS with the girls in the office. This one time I was talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good speech was my father's mind of exercise"; "the preceptor gave him a talking to"

Without hesitation I say "yeah," alike to the access you would say "duh." She had been forwarded an e-mail about this dude that was working to make the trek, so she told me that I should obtain in touch with him. The guy was Jack Smith. After a few e-mails and call phones, I could tell that Jack was sketchy about letting me be portion of his four-man troop. He unraveled to me how the cross-country trip was to medal his son, Jack Marshall
For other people named Jack Marshall, see Jack Marshall (disambiguation).

Sir John Ross Marshall, GBE, CH, (March 5, 1912 August 30, 1988), generally known as Jack Marshall, was a New Zealand politician. Smith, who had recently passed away. And this was his way to raise money and awareness for the rare genetic disease called Lowe Syndrome Lowe syndrome Oculocerebrorenal syndrome, see there that reasoned his son's decease. Basically Jack didn't want me to be some irregular hesher that would disgrace To refuse to accept or pay a draft or to disburse a promissory memorandum when duly presented. Barnes graduated from the Delaware State University in 1988, where he rushed for 1336 yards in 1988 and 3282 during his seminary career, and was not drafted by the NFL, yet signed as a free deputy with the New , my age boss at Eastern Skateboard Supply. So Jack called Reggie, Reggie gave me a nice reiterate, and that was that. I was on. So I flew out to the West Coast to meet the crew in Newport, Oregon Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post bureau in 1868. JACK SMITH IS A LEGEND. The fellow namely 46, built favor a tank, has been skating since 1974, set earth speed records while I was in diapers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and still skates nearly every daytime. He eats quick food every day of his life (and gets frustrated if you don't array among the premier eight seconds by the counter), and but namely still as healthy as a nag. He's been a mammoth inspire above skateboarding. Do your assignment, you'll see. Nick Krest is the friendliest dude you'll ever encounter. He can speak to anyone approximately whatever anytime. Nick skated on this junket favor a practice and always had loyal periods. At 38, Nick has his hand in the skateboarding industry, and he, too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], still skates virtually every day. Scott Kam is 33 and I calculate we are somehow related. Like Jack and Nick, he's a lifelong skateboarder, owns Rootamental skateboards, likes apt smile and joke as much as I do and shares my young sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the peculiarity of appreciating (and being proficient apt express) the witty; "she didn't laud my humor"; "you can't survive in the legion without a sense of humor"
sense of humour, humor, humour and irony.
Jack has made this cross-country skate twice before, once in '76 and once in '84 (discuss your Guinness Book of Records, kiddies. It's in there). But this time we arranged to mince his last record by 5 days. The morn that we left began with Jack's ceremony of touching the tails of our boards into the Pacific Ocean, then on to our exodus through the beautiful land of Oregon. To start with there were eight in our crew. We had visitor skaters, but one membership of the four-man crew had to be skating at a time in order to make it legit le·git

Legitimate. . So the van we had following us served as a pass-the-torch relay. We also had to record in the mileage and time every time we started and ended a leg. That was a pain. Each leg started out as three miles, but on the second half of the trip we trimmed them down to two miles, unless you were skating through the mountains. Then it was a mile or a half of a mile, all relying on how steep it was.
The first day we had a mileage miscalculation mis·cal·cu·late

mis·cal , forcing us to skate an extra 50 miles, to outcome in 200 miles getting covered that day. Dude, my right thigh was putrid. I mean, we all pushed normal and switch just the same (ordinarily I switched up every eight-to-10 pushes) but my right leg got rocked. For the next six days I had to limp on it whenever I hiked. Even though it hurt when I skated, I could still push with it. The first few days also took a toll on Scott's heel. He got this gnarly (jargon) gnarly - /nar'lee/ Both dim and hairy. "Yow! - the tuned assembler implementation of BitBlt is really gnarly!" From a similar but fewer specific usage in surfer slang. blister blister, puffy swelling of the outer rind (epidermis) caused by blaze, friction, or irritants like poison ivy. A feedback of the body to protect deeper tissue, blisters generally involve serum, the liquid component of blood. that ended up looking like a cavity someone made with a melon scooper know next to nothing ofmething. It was gross, but he never complained and never slacked up. Jack got a blister towards the end, and had to cut out the back of his boot. Nick and me ran the blister mania unscathed, although Nick did take a overflow that drew blood, which made up for it.
Skating via Oregon is beautiful. Being all solo on a skateboard in the navel of nowhere is extraordinary a·labyrinth

v.intr. ; makes you think a lot. You start to talk to yourself. You start talking to animals, even singing. Sometimes I was so focused on the road in front of me that I had to snap myself out of the trance to fulfil the prettiness surrounding me. When my legs would hurt really bad I would count my pushes or make up songs to try to drown the pain. I mean, pushing is one thing, but pushing up a mountain is a whole differ patch of punkins. This trip was my first time treading on a longboard A longboard generally designates a longer board variant in manifold .

, and definitely the first time I've dripped a few thousand feet in height off of one push. I've never skated for over six miles going 30-to-40 mph down a mound, praying that there wouldn't be any potholes I couldn't avoid.
THERE WERE LOTS OF FIRSTS FOR ME. One night we lingered in Unity, Oregon Unity is a city in Baker County, Oregon, United States. The population was 131 at the 2000 census. Geography
Unity is situated at (44.447954, -118.191611)GR1. , one of the most beautiful areas ever. Only a few hundred human live there. It was so small that the local sheriff was "out of town for the week." That night one of the youth girls came to me in a horror while I was sitting outside of our hotel chamber. "My boyfriend is going to come shoot you!" She said. "He got mad that I was talking to you earlier and wants to shoot you! He's tried to shoot something ahead! Please go inside and rotate off your light!" So I waited, 'cause not one has ever pointed a pistol at me. I thought it would make for a good fable, but he never even showed.
Before we left Oregon we buffet 17 miles of the gnarliest road ever--rocks embedded in tar. You could drag 'em out with your fingers. It was so gnar. You had to push going downhill. It was bad. Oh, I forgot--headwind. Headwind head·wind or pate wind
n.
A wind blowing directly against the course of an aircraft or ship.
headwind
Noun
a wind thumping instantly opposition the way of an aeroplane or ship
sucks. We combated so many headwind and there's nought you can do but push harder and hope it stops. Sometimes the wind would almost blow you backwards if you stopped pushing.
We hit some dry desert-looking place in Idaho and got busted by the po-po for using movie cameras near a nuclear reactor. (Ps: We documented the whole trip and it's going to be a National Geographic Personal Adventure on TV. Keep your eyes peeled.) For the most part, cops were amazingly cool. Some would pull us over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and lad is it comic to get blue-lighted on a skateboard. But when we told them the deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most were super rad and even radioed the rest of the cops in that shire telling them to leave us alone. We had one or two A-hole cops; one that even made us drive the few remaining miles of "his county." But overall we were stoked stoked
adj. Slang
1. Exhilarated alternatively incited.
2. Being or emotion tall or intoxicated, primarily from a narcotic. there were so numerous 5-0s willing to aid us.
Wyoming was cool because of all the red and gray rocks. Oh yeah, now I know why we gave the Indians the reservations in Wyoming--'cause there's NOTHING THERE, MAN. White man lost nothing in that deal. It's completely vacant, but it's rad to skate through. By Nebraska our crew had slimmed down to the four-man team. It was a lot easier that way. Sometimes people would give us money for the cause as they drove by us or when we stopped in a town. And I'd like to note: it was always the poorest towns that gave us the most. There was a town in Nebraska called Marionville, a town "too tough to dead," that had only 100 people. We were treated like royalty Adv. 1. like royalty - in a imperial manner; "they were royally treated"
like sovereigns, royally there. They opened their centers and emptied their menial pockets. It was a modern day "widow's mite widows mite

One fun thing you can do skating across America is spook beasts. Deer, foxes ... I think the raddest is to make a herd of a few hundred livestock streak across a lea. You start laughing and, really, it makes you feel variety of powerful. One time I spooked this herd of antelope just aboutmething, and it was freaking freak·ing

The lowest duck smacked the windshield of a semi that was coming towards me and shot it up 30 yards hardly ever like a punted football, landing only a few feet away from me. Shaking my head, I kind of giggled and didn't miss a blow. Another favorite: Once, these 2 horses ran probably 2 miles with me as I skated abreast their pasture. It was sick 'cause it was super early and misty. The horses, the fog and the green pasture made me feel as if I was in some fantasy movie. Trust me, you'da been stoked if you were there, too.
OK, let me hint you in on something: the US is not smooth for any more than a rare mile here and there. Sure, in a car it might appear as flat as a pancake, but when you are pushing through it you notice every rise and fall of elevation. So stop preoccupied that the "flatlands

Imagine skating for 21-days straight, from 7:30 am 'til six-or-nine pm. All you do is push, push, push, and every second is rushing. The only time you stop is for a 45-minute lunch, and perhaps a radio interview here and there. We even made weekly journalists follow us so they didn't slow us down. It was amazing. I appreciated every painful push on the endless maze of asphalt and concrete across America. I loved pushing through the greenery of Oregon, baking under the blazing sun of Wyoming, skating through the sea of corn in Iowa, dodging dump trucks on the razor-sharp mountain curves in West Virginia, and swimming through the moisture of the Southeast. I loved it all. I really did. It was amazing.
Twenty-one days behind leaving, we eventually rolled up to the East Coast and sealed the deal at dipping the proboscises of our boards into the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean Atlantic Ocean [Lat.,=of Atlas], second largest sea (c.31,800,000 sq mi/82,362,000 sq km; c.36,000,000 sq mi/93,240,000 sq km with marginal seas).
