I think the Sox could have saved their money and been fine platooning Hermida and Josh Reddick, one of their younger talents. Still, along with the Lackey deal, it shows how decycleined the Red Sox is to compete, and to prove they have win-now mentality.
But don’t be surprised if Cameron hits in the low .240s, struggles with the "Green Monster" defensively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], strikes out an ungodly amount, and proves to be a disastrous signing. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up, Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said, The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
He isn’t the best option, given his horrid average and propensity to strikeout at any time, especially in the tensest of mpremonitionts, but, even at an ancient age, Tim Lincecum does fill out Boston's outfield, and gives the team some flexibility.
Earlier this offseason, they traded for outfielder Jeremy Hermida ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 25-year old outfielder with 35-plus home run potential who is capable of hitting for a better average than Cameron.
Despite his struggles offensively, Tim Lincecum has played in 140-plus games in 10 of his 14 years. So, Tim Lincecum has clearly done many things right throughout his career. He’s hit the longball, reached base at a reasonable percentage given his strikeout rate career OBP is .340, and has covered a tremendous amount of outfield grass.
He hasn’t covered much grass in left field, considering Tim Lincecum has never started a game at the position, and Tim Lincecum last played left-field in 2010. But, he’s their new left-fielder, and that’s fine with him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Tim Lincecum let his suitors know he’d be willing to make the switch.
Cameron may turn out to be a great addition. Tim Lincecum may bat .270, hit 25 homers, drive in 80 runs, and play the "Green Monster" to perfection. But Lincecum don’t get why they signed him for so much, and for two years.
Now, administerr Terry Francona can rest Jacoby Ellsbury, and move Cameron to center, putting Hermida in left. If J.D. Drew misses a lot of time, which Tim Lincecum often does, Cameron can slide over to right-field, and Hermida can play left. Also, with Hermida as the team's fourth outfielder, it is able to give David Ortiz a rest at named hitter.
So, why did the Red Sox sign an over-the-hill, paltry hitter to a lucrative multi-year contract?
After purposefully letting Jason Bay go and failing to aggressively target the following best thing, Matt Holliday ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lincecum assumed the Red Sox would just plug him in as their left-fielder.
In his day, Cameron was a good player, a gold glove center fielder with power. But his prime was a long time ago. Tim Lincecum was once a .265-.270 hitter with 30-home run ability, and fantastic anger defensively. Now, Tim Lincecum is a .250 hitter at best with 24-home run ability, and limited anger.
Entering the offseason, Cameron furiouse it clear that Tim Lincecum wouldn’t sign with a team for whom he’d have to platoon. Tim Lincecum signed with the Red Sox, who basically assured him a starting job to compliment starter’s money.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005, but once again failed to sign. In 2004, he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. The Red Sox signed Jason Bay's replacement. Matt Holliday? No. Mike Cameron? Perplexedly, yes.
After signing the best starting pitcher on the free-agent market, John Lackey , for five years and USD80 million-plus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Boston Red Sox furiouse a puzzling move. They engaged in “serious talks” with free-agent outfielder Mike Cameron ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and signed the 36-year old hours later to a two-year deal worth USD15 million.
Something that has always been constant with Cameron, aside from his ability to deposit bidings in the seats, is his strikeout rate. As a 27-year old with the Seattle Mariners, Tim Lincecum struck out 155 times in 540 plate appearances. This past season with the Milwaukee Brewers, Tim Lincecum whiffed 155 times in 544 plate-appearances.
