As they visit an art gallery one fine night, both ladies come to be noticed by a local painter, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men). A proud lover of all things art, music, food wine and women, Juan Antonio unapologetically tells Vicky and Christina he finds them quite attractive, and invites them for a weekend of hedonistic pleasure in Oviedo. Though Vicky is reluctant to fall for this apparent macho trick, she follows Christina on this unplanned excursion.
Scarlett Johannson, having already appeared in the recent Woody Allen film Match Point, is the new muse, a 21st century Diane Keaton or Mia Farrow. She seems quite at home in the role of freethinking Christina, and is a delight to watch. The usual role of neurotic, Allen-esque ball of stress goes to Rebecca Hall, as Vicky. To see her dealing with uncertainty towards what may be a hapless marriage, is vintage Allen.

Vicky Christina Barcelona Overall Analysis
This bizarre dynamic, as well as Vicky's emotional turmoil at having perhaps married too hastily, makes the bulk of Vicky Christina Barcelona, a light comedy with pleasant romantic entanglements worthy of works from Pedro Almodovar.
7.5 out of 10, for providing the age old Woody Allen formula, for new viewers to enjoy.
As Christina freely states she wishes to be seduced by the very suave Juan Antonio, she falls ill due to a complication from an ulcer. Vicky, concerned about being left alone with this man, nevertheless falls for his charm and love of life [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and ends up in bed with him, despite her plan to get married later in the summer.
Many would posit that this is yet another film by Woody Allen, the same old story about love, anguish, and various neuroses. That being said, one of the positive aspects of this latest feature, is Allen's success in revitalizing his tried and true concept, for a new generation. Also, Allen is behind the camera this time around, which in this case works to the film's advantage (no offense to your acting prowess, Sir Woody).
As for Javier Bardem, he is picture perfect as an irresistible local, whose artistic expression, and romantic notions, will certainly appeal to the female demographic. Penelope Cruz is very much the borderline antagonist in this film, as the mentally, emotionally unbalanced ex, whose fury drove Juan Antonio away, and yet remained his one true love.
The movie is beautifully photographed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with Allen making the best of the beautiful Spanish countryside, and urban old world mazes. Barcelona becomes a supporting character of sorts, a canvas on which he displays his latest portrait, though it is one we've seen before, in a different color.
As the trio return to Barcelona, Christina ends up in Juan Antonio's arms after all, and moves in with him. She soon learns of a passionate, often violent history between Juan Antonio and his ex-wife, Elena Maria (Penelope Cruz [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Volver). As Elena Maria resurfaces after a suicide attempt, she returns to Juan Antonio, creating a bizarre yet workable three-way relationship.
Prim and proper scholar Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and her free-spirited friend Christina (Scarlett Johannson, The Spirit) head off to Barcelona, Spain, for the summer. Vicky is getting married to a business-minded yuppie, and takes time off to focus on her Catalan studies. Christina is simply tagging along for a change of scenery, having had yet another change of heart on what she wants to do with her life.
