For travelers who don’t wish to stay an entire month, Ixtapan, which has been rated among the best budget spas in the world by such guidebooks as Frommer’s, offers shorter packages. Mother-and-daughter specials are offered for five days and four nights or eight days and seven nights.

More and more American and Canadian “snowbirds” – retired boomers and seniors who go south to avoid cold winters – are choosing vacations in Mexico and Central American rather than perennial favorite states Florida and Arizona.
The climate at Ixtapan is not tropical but rather what a resort spokesperson describes as “California-type mountain weather.” Meals are served at several on-site restaurants, one of which is oriented toward spa cuisine, another toward gourmet choices and at both, seating is casual, so a visitor who comes alone can feel comfortable finding others to join for meals.

Fitness and yoga classes, golf and tennis lessons are included in the package price. Ixtapan’s fitness classes and daily morning walks are designed for every level. A trainer is on call at the gym. The resort has two pools and a par 72 18-hole golf course.
The town of Ixtapan de la Sal is nearby and guests typically go there to shop. “The village is known as so safe and friendly, that hotel guests walk by themselves to pick up local crafts or visit the street market [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” says Phyllis Stoller, a travel consultant to Ixtapan.

What attracts snowbirds to Ixtapan aside from its resort services is its affordability. The resort offers 28-day stays with all meals, daily, internet, bottled water and just about everything else (60 to 70 services) for very reasonable prices, which begin at $3 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],930 double occupancy and $4,915 single occupancy.
Beyond comfort and fun, the resort emphasizes safety, heath and security. An English-speaking doctor is on staff and hotel staffers also speak English. Transfers from the Mexico City or Toluca airports are included in the package price. Resort-marked vans meet guests with signs and a manifest with their names. Problems with violence that have made headlines elsewhere in Mexico are not an issue here.
In Mexico, one favorite spot is the Ixtapan Spa Hotel and Golf Resort, located in the foothills of the picturesque Sierra Madre Mountains in the south central portion of the country south of Mexico City and north of Oaxaca, amid colonial villages.
