There are some smokers on the St. Edward’s University campus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, said they were mostly unmoved by the FDA’s announcement. “I don’t really care,” freshman Michael Rote said.
“It might deter any new smokers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not any old ones.” Senior Jaclyn Touchstone agreed. “I don’t think it’s going to stop anyone from wanting to smoke,” she said. Even some St. Edward’s staff wonder if the new labels would affect sales. St. Edwards’ Associate Professor of Marketing Daniel Rajaratnam said that he doesn’t think so. “I really think it’s going to be ignored by smokers.
The diehard smokers will have rationalized the consequences, but it could be a deterrent for new smokers,” Rajaratnam said. A TOTAL of 15 students under the age of 18 had been caught smoking in public this year and ordered to undergo mandatory treatment at a smoking cessation clinic.
This was disclosed during yesterday’s briefing on the hazards of smoking for Department of Youth and Sports officers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who routinely deal with youth and young athletes. Dk Nurzafiftah Pg Asmadi, a senior nurse at the Health Promotion Centre, said that research showed that students who smoke are three times more likely to consume alcohol, eight times more likely to smoke marijuana and 22 times more likely to abuse cocaine.
It is illegal for people under the age of 18 to smoke in Brunei and the Ministry of Health (MoH) has also implemented a smoking ban in public places,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including restaurants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], schools, government buildings, bus stations and sidewalks.
They include: a limp cigarette with the words, “Tobacco use can cause impotence;” a hospitalized man with the tagline “Cigarettes cause lung cancer;” and a close-up of a cancerous mouth with the line “Cigarettes cause mouth diseases.”
“The government’s been working on this for years now and there has been some very unfortunate and inexplicable delays in a new round of cigarette packaging warnings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” said Rob Cunningham, a tobacco control specialist at the Canadian Cancer Society.
“Other countries are leapfrogging over Canada in terms of the size and improved content,” he added, pointing out some of the 39 countries that followed Canada with warning labels are already on their second and third round of updates.
In a statement to Postmedia News, Health Canada said the department “continues to examine this issue” and “to review public-opinion research on the effectiveness of health-warning messages. “The findings from this research will help Health Canada have messages that will be noticed and effective for all Canadians.”
