sure that I wont be surprising anyone when I say that we are currently living through one of the worst financial down turns in the history of capitalism.
Nor will anyone be surprised to hear that this crisis was largely brought about by our governments mismanagement of financial regulation.
Weve all seen the CEOs of preposterously large banks serving up PR spun platitudes to the Select Committee, usually stating words to the effect of: Yeah, sorry about all the mess but it really was more your fault than Can I have my 750,000 p/a pension now?
We know that, after losing all our money [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we now have to pay out to keep these banks and insurance companies afloat when simultaneously they are no longer paying the billions in taxes each year to the treasury that they once were and that on top of this, Education, Health Care, Defence, Infrastructure, Civil Servants and their pensions and the 40million a day that it costs us to stay in Europe all still have to be paid for on a hand to mouth basis.
We know all this and we know all about the Stealth Taxes that will now be routinely imposed on us by a Government ever more desperate to balance the books.
So, armed with all this knowledge, I dont know why I find myself surprised and dismayed at the grey areas starting to immerge in the Governments latest round of Stealth Taxes.
Ive just been reading an article on the Directgov website about the fine for not wearing a seatbelt whilst driving, being raised from 30 to 60.
Snuck into this announcement is a small, incidental mention of misrepresented number plates also being subject to the same fine increase.
At first glance this may not seem too important until you consider how the vast majority of these misrepresented number plates came to be on vehicles in the first place.
The Prefix Style Registration System was launched in 1983, by which time the Government had become very aware of the resale value of vehicle registrations and so decided to withhold the numbers 1 to 20 from all the registration sequences (A1 AAA to A20 YYY) in the hope of selling them later. They continued to do this until August 1991 (J reg) when they decided to withhold a few other sequences between 20 and 999.
DVLA Personalised Registrations first started selling number plates to the public in around 1990.
Again this is nothing to get excited about. Customers are advised on the DVLA website that:- If you intend purchasing a DVLA registration to misrepresent it on your number plate, we would rather you did not buy.
So that (rather tenuously) would cover them against any misunderstandings.
It all starts to get a little fishy, however, when you take into account how they price these number plates.
The DVLA sell somewhere between 500 and 1000 registrations every single day via their website for between 245 and about 4000 making the Government a mean average of 80 million a year. That figure doesnt include the auctions that are held several times a year where they offer registrations they believe to be worth more than 4K.
Not a bad result at all for a product that costs them next to nothing to produce.
Because the cheaper registrations are usually bought for the last three letters [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spelling out either initials or a short name, the buyer is less inclined to misrepresent the number plate. The problem begins when whole or nearly whole words can be found within registrations which almost forces the purchaser to misrepresent the number plate.
This forced misrepresentation is brought about by the fact that the more DE51RED and CL05SER the word accuracy, the more the DVLA charge for a registration which in turn means, the more likely it is that the purchaser will misrepresent the number plate to get their moneys worth.
(If youd bought the registration F1 ASH from the DVLA for 6600 how tempted would you be to close that gap when you had the number plates made?)
The DVLA has an average of 30 m

Replacing What's In Your Bag - How to Use a Hybrid to Eliminate Many Common Mistakes
Author: Janet StrainAdded: October 9, 2006

Most beginner golfers don’t even know there’s a new option on the course for hitting the ball in any dastardly situation. Most people assume it’s woods and irons – pick from the two.
But the hybrid club is a combination of a fairway wood and an iron, and it helps you stay afloat when Mother Nature is working against you with the terrain, or you find yourself with a shot you’re not sure you can hack your way out of.
It’s awful when you’re on a par 5 and your tee shot wound up a little off in the rough. Yet you still need to make it all the way to the green, or at least close enough for a chip shot.
If you’re in high grass, you might think your only option is to pull an iron out and hack into the weeds to chop your way into the fairway. A wood could never do in this situation, right? Enter the stainless steel hybrid. A miniature wood-shaped club that gives your center of gravity a boost and helps you cut out of the rough when the chips are down and you need to shoot long and stay on course.
A hybrid club can help you launch a ball higher into the air. You can use them to replace many of your irons [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as the 1-4 irons. Many LPGA pros are carrying them in their bags.
In 2005, LPGA pros took four different hybrid brands out of their bags for a first place win. TaylorMade was the most widely used hybrid, followed by Ping, Sonartec, and Nickent.
Most players [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], male or female, cringe at the thought of having to use a long iron. Most pull out a fairway wood over a long iron any day of the week. With a hybrid, you get the accuracy of an iron with the power of a wood.
Depending on the length of time you’ve been playing, you might already be comfortable with your low irons. That’s perfectly acceptable, but beginners are often plagued with low iron difficulties [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a hybrid can eliminate many of these new-to-the-game mistakes.
Some players tried the hybrids when they first came out on the market. Unfortunately, the technology didn’t live up to what it is today, and many people refuse to revisit the idea due to a prior bad experience.
The top manufacturers looked at the various reasons consumers weren’t gobbling up the clubs and went back to the drawing board to revitalize the club’s efficiency and performance ability.
Hybrids work well in almost any situation. Many players use them off the tee if they’re on a par 3 hole. They’re also used out of the bunker, out of the rough, and even as a putter around the edge of the green, a la Tiger Woods.
Chipping with a hybrid is perfect if you want to keep the ball low [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for instance. You have to practice shots like this because it’s not what the club was originally designed for.
On average, a hybrid club can give you a two to eight yard advantage over an iron club. But they also deliver on accuracy, not just distance. Tests have shown that hybrid shots generally wind up closer to the target than low iron shots.
Shop around and find a hybrid that best suits your tastes. Some people get intimidated by a shot just by looking at the club head. A driver with a big, bulbous head can make you fear that you’ll hit it somewhere other than the sweet spot, while a low iron can sometimes cause you to feel like it’s too small to give you the power you need for your shot.
The hybrid gives you the “just right” approach so that you’ll have the comfort and confidence that you need to swing and make impact with the ball to your advantage.
